How I made three-piece women's suit

For my graduation I wanted to be a bit different.

First question was should I make a dress or a suit?

I've always seen my self in a dress on this day, but a month before I decided to make a suit. Not any suit. I wanted a three-piece suit. Only place to go next was Pinterest.

Now that I have some idea what I wanted next step was to find a pattern.

Pattern for the jacket was not a problem. I knew what I wanted for a while and that was pattern from Burda 3/2011 no.120.

Vest was the hardest thing to find. Not so many magazines that I own have a vest in tham. I found a pattern in Burda 3/97 no.109B. In that same Burda there where pants too no.107A.

Because am using Burda magazine pattern needs to be traced on a tracing paper and than cut out of fabric. There is a lot of pieces. And I cut all of tham out first.

Parts for the pants with interlining.

My advice is to keep an eye on the parts if you are making all three at the same time. There are a lot of pieces and you don't want to lose any of tham.

Next step is sewing. I started with the jacket thinking it will be easy. Boy was I wrong. I was afraid to make pants because I never made tham before, but thay where nice and really quick.

Hardest part of the jacket was to figure out this lower part. Everything needed to me lined up.

Thing that surprised me the most is vest. I put all the pieces together and when lining came in the picture I had no idea what to do. In normal coat or a jacket you finish the seam in a sleeve, but vest doesn't have a sleeve.

One thing to note is that this project had to be done in a month. Now that sounds like a lot of time but it wasn't for me. I work and study in other town and I can't take my sewing machine with me. So I was able to sew just for 2 days every week. That was fine until I got to the lining. Only thing I don't know how to put in. I had to go to lokal seamstress and the woman who taught me to sew, and ask her for help around the lining. So she put lining in jacket and the vest. Now I have to make one more vest to learn how to do it.

I did learn one thing in this project, besides keeping all the pieces in one place, I learned how to make button holes with my new foot and sewing machine.

You can make button holes without this foot but it is fun.

I like to point out that I am still a beginner and that I didn't have that much, or not at all, experience in some areas like lining and pockets. It is best visible in this picture. I fixed it a bit but it can't be helped.

All and all of this was a fun project. Lots of work and I wish I had more time to document the whole process, but I was in a bit of a hurry. I can say that it is really comfortable and gives you a little self-confidence.
